Mnhami, já temos batata-doce / We have sweet potatoes

Hoje foi o dia da segunda colheita de batata-doce, foi uma surpresa agradável porque eu pensava que já não ia apanhar grande quantidade de batata. Afinal, apanhei 2 caixas e um balde com batatas roídas pelos ratos.

Today was the second day harvest of sweet-potatoes. It was apleasant surprise because I thought I wasn't going to catch a lot more potatoes. After all, I have 2 more boxes and one bucket with rat eated potatoes.

E uma batata gigante! Mais de 2kg! Esta estava na cama em permacultura (em Março tapámos as ervas com cartão e pusémos por cima estrume de cavalo).

And one giant potatoe! Over 2kg! This was in the permaculture bed (in March we covered the weeds with cardboard and horse manure on top of it)

Depois plantei uma cama onde estiveram amendoins com as pontas das plantas arrancadas. Na primavera ficamos com mais umas batatinhas e com rama para plantar novas batateiras.

After that, I planted one bed where we had peanuts with the tops of the sweet potatoe plants In Spring we'll have some more little potatoes and vines to plant new potatoes.

E enquanto isso, o pequenote lá andou a espreitar tratores na canada :)

And in the meanwhile, the little one was looking for tractors in the dirt track :)

Em julho ainda estava bem verdinha.... / In July it was still very green....

Aqui estão algumas verdes, outras a ficar douradas. E já tenho um pequeno ajudante :) 

Here some are green, some are getting golden and I  have already a little helper :)

Agosto / August

E aqui estão elas! Infelizmente algumas estão bolorentas e eu não sei como as vou separar... Se calhar vamos ter supergalinhas!

And here they are! Unfortunately some are mouldy and I don't know how to separe them... Maybe we'll have super chikens!

Super-alimentos no João Bom - Amaranto / Superfoods in João Bom - Amaranth

        Foi com muito entusiasmo que experimentámos cultivar amaranto e quinoa no João Bom. Semeado no início de Maio, transplantado no fim de Maio e colhido em Setembro, o Amaranto revelou-se uma planta bastante robusta e de fácil cultivo.  acima de tudo, é uma planta linda, e torna a horta muito mais colorida =)

A parte de remover as sementes das folhas foi um bocado morosa, mas com alguma prática penso que iremos conseguir fazê-lo mais rapidamente. O sabor é excelente! Este foi mais um dos alimentos que provei pela primeira vez só depois de o cultivar.

It was with a lot of enthusiasm that we tried to grow amaranth and quinoa in João Bom. Seeded in the beggining of May, transplanted in the end of May and harvested in September, amaranth showed itself as a very robust and easy plant to grow and, above all, it's a beautifull plant that makes the garden much more colourfull =)

The part of removing the seeds was taking some time, but with practice we'll be able to make it faster. The taste is excellent! This was one more food that I taste for the first time only after growing it .

A colheita do milho

Quase 5 meses depois de semeado, foi hoje que colhemos pela primeira vez milho de uma variedade local. Encontrámos muitas lagartas, mas temos também muitas maçarocas intactas que iremos guardar para semear no próximo ano. As outras vão servir de um belo petisco para as 3 galinhas comilonas...

Almost 5 months after seeding, today we harvested for the first time corn from a local variety. We found a lot of catterpillars, but we also have some whole pods that we'll save for seeding next year. The others will make our chiken delighted...
